We offer young people aged 16+ paid work experience in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

We grow RISE in direct partnership with young people.

We help young people to positively support their peers through our ‘Peer Support Worker’ model.

‘I feel taken seriously’
-Dylan Law, former RISE Peer Support Worker

Who can take part?

We welcome interest from young people aged 16+ who are interested in gaining work experience in any of the following areas:

  • Martial arts

  • Sport and fitness

  • Working with children and young people

  • Non-profit activities more broadly

We are particularly focussed on working with young people who may be outside of education, employment or training, but who are keen to gain meaningful, hands-on work experience.

Young people do not need experience of BJJ to take on work experience, as it is not a direct coaching role, although there will be opportunities to work towards this over time.

‘It helps me build my confidence, my leadership skills, and interact with younger people’
-Ashley Brown, RISE Peer Support Worker

How does it work?

After an initial interview to determine eligibility, we support all young people to undertake a DBS check, First Aid and Safeguarding Training so they can be insured via the UKBJJA, our governing body.

Once this is complete, we will book in young people to attend our sessions as a Peer Support Worker. Key responsibilities include:

  • Helping set up, clean and pack away ground mats

  • Taking registers

  • Completing evaluation surveys with participants

  • Providing positive support and encouragement to participants, including one-to-one attention where appropriate

  • Demonstrating techniques with a more advanced instructor

We provide in-session mentoring and development opportunities to our Peer Support Workers to ensure they grow and develop confidence in the role.

Young people are able to train with us for free at our adults sessions during the period of their placement to assist their understanding of BJJ.

We pay £14 per session to ensure young people’s time is correctly valued.
